Jury Winner

On May 27th, 2008, a 5 panel jury convened at the WTC 7 building for nearly 10 hours to select the winners of the White House Redux competition. Nearly 2000 registered for the competition to redesign the White House. Each participant was allowed to include up to 12 images with an optional animation. By the submission deadline in April, nearly 450 entries with 55 animations were submitted. Animation work ranged from high concept video art to lectures on the meaning of architecture of power.

There were nearly 5000 sheets posted in the 40,000 square foot space on the 45th floor of the World Trade Center 7 building, provided by Silverstien Properties. The density of the paperwork could be seen from the street.

Three prizes are being awarded based on the Jury results:

First Prize    $5,000
Second Prize   $3,000
Third Prize   $1,500

The jury's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into after the announcement of the winners.

Popular Vote Winner

Under Projects on this website, we included the projects that were shortlisted by the Jury. For 30 days, people voted for any project that they thought addressed the Call for Ideas. On November 3rd, 2008, we closed the polls and the popular vote winner was selected.

There is only a first prize for popular vote winner. The prize amount was based on whatever money was raised by the full banner ad on the projects page - after 213,429 Page Impressions for 426 clicks, a Page CTR of 0.20% and a Page eCPM of $0.65, the final earnings were $138.30.

White House Redux - The Book

White House Redux - The Book

With almost 500 submissions from 42 countries around the world, White House Redux—a competition launched by Storefront for Art and Architecture and Control Group last January—became one of the most talked-about architecture competitions in 2008.

Published to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of the competition's results at Storefront for Art and Architecture, White House Redux - The Book contains a compendium of documentation related to the competition and an overview of the results. It includes essays by Joseph Grima (Director of Storefront) and Geoff Manaugh (BLDGBLOG), a history of the existing White House and 123 selected projects as well as the four winning submissions. A jury assessed the submissions in the spectacular setting of the 45th floor of the World Trade Center Tower 7, a process documented in the book's 30-page photoessay by Marty Hyers.
